Understanding AI Equity

I am thrilled to introduce the concept image for the AI Equity Project. This image resonates with me deeply. It captures what I often struggle to articulate: AI Equity is not a binary issue.

It can feel like a conversation that’s either a 0 or a 1. We might think an organization, policy, tool, or practice is either equitable or it isn’t. But that’s not how it works in real life.

Equity is contextual. It shifts from one community to another. It depends on various factors: power, history, access, language, trust, geography, disability, culture, timing, and who gets to shape the rules in the first place.

The Nuance of AI Equity

The shaded, overlapping semi-circles in the image represent this complexity. They remind us that AI Equity looks different depending on who interacts with the technology, who makes decisions about it, and who bears the risks.

This is why I am passionate about advancing this project. For me, AI Equity means rejecting the oversimplified version of this conversation. By "oversimplified," I refer to discussions that end with a checklist. In these conversations, the most privileged voices often define what is good, safe, fair, or innovative.

I want this project to foster honest discussions. We must engage seriously and not confuse standardization with justice.

Looking Ahead: The 2026 AI Equity Project

As we move forward, I approach the 2026 AI Equity Project with the same vision. This year, I am excited to co-create with our sector:

  • A 2026 AI Equity project report (as always)

  • An AI Equity workbook

  • A scholarship cohort, providing space for 20 organizations to learn and experiment with AI Equity

Stay tuned for more details throughout the year. We will share updates in time, with joy, and through care.

The Importance of Nuance

For now, I am grateful for this concept image. It embodies our collective nuance, which is essential for this work. Nuance is what we need to navigate the complexities of AI Equity.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge all the friends whose joy, wisdom, and fiscal sponsorship make this project possible: Beth Kanter, Kara Young Ponder, PhD, Tasha Van Vlack, Alexis H., Bloomerang, Blackbaud, Giving Compass, Aperio Philanthropy, Common Ground Consulting, The Nonprofit Hive.

I also want to recognize a few more friends who have been part of this journey since its inception in March 2024: Chris Martin, Michelle Flores Vryn, CFRE, Kelsey Kramer, Julia Gackenbach, JoAnn Mills, Kerrin Mitchell Johnson, CharityVillage, Lisa MacDonald, Fundraising.AI, GivingTuesday, Community-Centric Fundraising (CCF).

Embracing the Future of AI Equity

As we embark on this journey, I invite you to reflect on the importance of equity in AI. How can we ensure that everyone benefits from technological advancements?

Let’s engage in meaningful conversations. Together, we can create a future where AI serves all communities equitably.

I believe in the power of collaboration. By working together, we can shape a more just and inclusive world.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support and engagement are invaluable as we strive for AI Equity.
